With New York City in the grip of a crime wave, the powers that be summon Simon Templar (Hayward), known to cops and criminals as "the Saint," from South America to get the goods on an evil underworld kingpin called "the Big Fellow." This was the first film in the series, and the entire

production is slick and brimming with imagination. Louis Hayward, who played the sleuth only in this and the final film in the series (THE SAINT'S GIRL FRIDAY, 1954), is a touch naive and over-eager, but generally he acquits himself well in the role. The strong script, which remained relatively

faithful to Leslie Charteris' novel, is energetically directed by Ben Holmes. THE SAINT IN NEW YORK proved to be a popular release and RKO immediately bought the rights to the rest of the "Saint" novels.
