Lawrence Tibbett, in his debut performance, earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor as a Russian bandit leader who falls in love with princess Owen, whose brother wronged Tibbett's sister. He kills the brother, then kidnaps the princess, but she is less than responsive. He is

captured and flogged, though as the whip is being brought down, Owen realizes that she loves him. Weakly received upon its release, THE ROGUE SONG was acclaimed only for Tibbett's (a Metropolitan Opera baritone) vocalizing, and not at all for its comedy. The film, in fact, was ready for release

when MGM decided to shoot a few scenes with Laurel and Hardy. Unfortunately we can no longer judge the quality of Tibbett's voice, or L&H's humor, or Barrymore's direction, or especially the Technicolor process of THE ROGUE SONG--as far as is known, no existing prints are to be had. If one shows

up it could be a pleasant surprise.
