Larry Darrell (Tyrone Power) is an idealistic youth, a former WW I pilot whose experiences in battle have caused him to question the moral values and the very fiber of his society. Returning to Chicago, Larry disturbs his high-society fiancee, Isabel (Gene Tierney), with his inexplicable

urge to seek out the real meaning of life. He balks at the thought of joining the social creme de la creme, and instead embarks on a quest to find intellectual and spiritual freedom, journeying to Paris and Nepal, where he finds an elderly Hindu mystic who brings peace to his troubled mind and

spirit. Ten years later, Larry is reunited with Isabel and his former friends, all of whom have undergone various degrees of suffering--physically, emotionally, and financially. More melodrama and romance than war film, THE RAZOR'S EDGE--based on the classic novel by Somerset Maugham--depicts a

generation of people affected by war, by the senselessness of battlefield deaths and war's constant reminders of mortality. The film examines the possible futility of life, including the certain futility of war, and provides an intelligent and thoughtful counterpoint to the many films that

celebrate glory in battle.
