A powerful, but, unfortunately, technically spotty, film that illustrates the horrors suffered by the Russian people at the hands of the Nazis during WW II. Uzhvey stars as a member of a partisan group who leaves her village and goes off to have her baby. Because of a weakling mayor and

the Russian mistress of a German officer, Uzhvey is captured by the Nazis, and tortured. Eventually, she and her baby are killed. Surprisingly, the film does not end with a vicious statement or immediate vengeance on the Nazis, but with a civilized plea from a minor character that the Germans

should be brought to justice and face their crimes in a court of law. (In Russian; English subtitles.)
