story, THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS works in a fine, good-natured way. Bennett plays a Puritan maiden in 1776 Connecticut. She meets Lederer, a Hessian, and the two fall in love and eventually bed. Though the premise is wide open for some cheap sex gags or a good farce, this film is neither. The humor

is based on innocence and is well-played by the believable leads. The result is a film that is quite amusing in its own way.
