Curtis plays a young French adventurer who secretly is the mysterious Purple Mask, a fabled hero (at least in this film) who rides about as a sort of Scarlet Pimpernel, saving Royalists from Napoleon's guillotine. Once in Curtis' custody, they are spirited out of France to England.

Naturally, Napoleon, played by Cornthwaite, wants to get rid of the pesky Curtis. Though often farfetched and negligible compared to a Douglas Fairbanks adventure, THE PURPLE MASK has some good moments of cheap, swashbuckling fun.
