Efficiently directed but colorlessly played, this crime thriller unspools like a made-for-TV cop movie, and its last-minute plot twists don't make up for the derivativeness that precedes them. Undercover police officer Terry Martin (Nick Moran) has been living on the edge ever since he insinuated himself into the criminal empire of Simon Bacig (Stephen Lang). Terry can trust no one, and his one-man-show tactics nearly compromise a sting by the FBI, which also has Bacig under surveillance. Unfortunately, Terry's excuse for absenting himself from Bacig and reporting back to Captain Zack Mallette (Michael Kopsa) has been that he needs to spend time with his wife. Now Bacig wants to meet the little woman, and Terry has to come up with a wife or blow his cover. Mallette gives the perilous assignment to rookie Susan Reese (Jennifer Esposito), and Bacig gets the hots for her. Stuck with an untried partner, Terry warns Susan to play it cool; he's furious when she accepts an invitation for them to spend the weekend at Bacig's country estate. Bacig deliberately flaunts his sexual attraction to Susan in order to test Terry, for reasons that aren't immediately apparent. And Terry falls genuinely in love with Susan, which blinds him to the larger implications of her laissez-faire attitude toward undercover work. While Terry's been busy compiling damning evidence against Bacig on tape, someone has been informing Bacig of Terry's every move. Bacig's men later snatch Terry and seize Bacig's audiotaped admissions — is it Susan, the cops or the FBI who tipped off Terry's target and got him into some serious hot water? Technical smoothness is the operative phrase here, as familiar undercover maneuvers fall slickly into place; it's a shame that the actors never achieve the professional polish of the behind-the-scenes personnel.
