Quinlan and Collins are lovers who want to marry, but Collins' domineering mother, Straight, hates the idea. Straight wants her son to take over the construction empire Straight's father began many years before and feels that Quinlan, for reasons never explained, will ruin those plans.

The loving couple gets in a car accident that puts Collins in a coma and leaves Quinlan horribly disfigured. While Collins is unconscious, Straight visits Quinlan in the hospital and offers to pay for Quinlan's plastic surgery if the young woman will leave town and never see Collins again. Quinlan

agrees and leaves, Collins recovers, and the remainder of the film is spent delaying their inevitable reunion. Boring, contrived, and manipulative. The tune "I'll Never Say Goodbye" by David Shire and Alan and Marilyn Bergman was Oscar-nominated for Best Song.
