Directed and photographed by Peter Hyams (RUNNING SCARED; 2010; OUTLAND), THE PRESIDIO is set in San Francisco and pairs an aging Army lieutenant colonel, Alan Caldwell (Sean Connery), with a slick young cop, Jay Austin (Mark Harmon), to investigate the murder of a military policewoman.

Complicating matters is Caldwell's frisky daughter, Donna (Meg Ryan), who has recently returned from college and becomes involved with Austin in a hot and heavy romance. After lengthy detailing of Donna's early psychological traumas, director Hyams remembers that about an hour earlier he began a

film about a murder in the officer's club, and Caldwell and Austin dig up some answers. A thoroughly uninvolving picture, THE PRESIDIO is chiefly the victim of a horrendous screenplay by Larry Ferguson (BEVERLY HILLS COP II; HIGHLANDER). When it isn't providing mundane dialog, Ferguson's script

assaults the viewer with senseless exposition continuously dredged up from the characters' pasts. Connery is the film's saving grace, but one can't help but feel a bit embarrassed for him as he puts up with such listless filmmaking.
