Charlie (Mickey Rourke) is desperately trying to escape his old neighborhood, and Paulie (Eric Roberts), his dim-witted cousin, is always looking for a get-rich-quick scheme. Diane (Daryl Hannah) is Charlie's girl friend. When he learns she is pregnant, he agrees to go along with a wild

plan involving the mob, safe cracking, and a racehorse. Little works in this contrived mess, but by far the worst aspect of it is Roberts' over-the-top histrionics. The film tries hard to create a relationship similar to that of Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro in Martin Scorsese's MEAN STREETS

(1973), but the actors' performances are so out of sync that the effort quickly becomes hopeless. Geraldine Page received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
