A contrived murder mystery that was subjected to one of the strangest marketing campaigns ever dreamed up. When RKO began production on THE PHANTOM OF CRESTWOOD, they immediately ran a radio dramatization of the same story with the same characters on NBC for six weeks. When it came to the

last episode, however, eager listeners were given the opportunity to send in their own ideas on how to end the story, with prizes offered to those who came up with the best endings. When the film was released, the loyal radio audience flocked to the theaters to see how the mystery did end. Morley

plays a shady lady who summons five of her former male "friends" together and tells them they must give her large sums of money, or she will expose her relationship with each of them. She's soon found murdered and there are five likely suspects, of course. Enter detective Cortez, who grills them

all as we see their various relationships with the deceased through a series of flashbacks. Eventually the killer is pinpointed, much to the disappointment of the radio listeners who had probably come up with better solutions on their own.
