In the light of Hitchcock's THE LODGER, none of the other film versions of this story even come close, but this one is commendable nonetheless. Musician Novello appears to be a soft-spoken gentle sort to his girl friend and to the people in the boarding house where he lives. However,

when a rash of Jack-the-Ripper-style murders occur, he is the man who is suspected. He is nearly done in by a lynch mob, but is saved when the real murderer is apprehended. This is the first remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic (filmed silently in 1926). Other versions would follow in 1944, and in

1954 as THE MAN IN THE ATTIC, also starring Novello.
