Overly sentimental, but with its heart in the right place, THE OLIVE TREES OF JUSTICE tells the story of Prothon, a Parisian who returns to Algiers (he was raised there) during the war of independence to be with his dying father. His memories of a happy childhood are sparked by the

rubble-strewn streets, and he wonders why French and Algerian children cannot play together as he and his friends used to. After his father dies, dozens of friends, French and Arab, come to pay their respects. An Arab friend tries to persude Prothon to stay in Algeria, but he declines and explains

that he must return to his life in Paris. Things change for Prothon when his normally racist aunt runs to the aid of an Arab boy who gets hit by a car. Encouraged by this display of human emotion, Prothon decides to remain in Algeria after all. Released in France in 1962.
