This powerful, disturbing film noir stars Danton as a schizophrenic mental patient who is forced into out patient status due to hospital overcrowding. Before he gains his freedom, the doctors advise him to avoid stressful situations. Danton boards a bus to a beachside motel and finds that

he likes the area, and the motel owner's daughter, Miller. The two begin a romance, but their happiness is shattered when Miller's father discovers that Danton is a mental patient. Threatening to have Danton recommitted unless he leaves his daughter alone, the motel owner pushes Danton too far.

Danton's mind snaps momentarily and he kills the motel owner. Panic sets in and Danton flees down the beach with Miller. He decides to kill her and then himself, but when he pushes her into the water, the shock brings him back to his senses and he saves her. In the end, Danton gives himself up to

the police. An interesting precursor to Hitchcock's PSYCHO (which shares several story elements with this film--notably schizophrenia and a run-down motel), THE NIGHT RUNNER is much more sympathetic to its mentally ill protagonist than many other filmic interpretations of similar material are.
