This fine drama details the lives of a small group of families in a New York suburb who suddenly find themselves involved in a murder trial. Adrianne Allen, an extremely disturbed and neurotic woman, commits suicide and leaves a note blaming her husband (Clive Brook) for his dalliance

with young neighbor Lila Lee. Brook discovers the note and destroys it to protect Lee, leading the police to suspect murder, and soon Brook is before the court. Any number of witnesses in the neighborhood could clear him of the charge, but a code of silence develops because they all have reasons

for lying about their activities on the night of the murder. Eventually an old man, Charley Grapewin, comes forward and testifies, simultaneously exposing the petty weaknesses of his neighbors.
