This is the third film based on Astrid Lindgren's precocious and unorthodox little heroine, following PIPPI IN THE SOUTH SEAS (1974) and PIPPI ON THE RUN (1977). This time Tami Erin plays the little girl with the wired pigtails. The movie opens on board a pirate vessel captained by her

father. A violent storm sends Pippi into the sea, and she winds up in a coastal town that she turns topsy turvy with her magical powers and irresponsible ways. Because of her pranks, she eventually runs afoul of the local social worker (Eileen Brennan), who forces her to attend school with

predictably disastrous results. Without question, this film can't be accused of moralizing in the manner common to most children's films. In fact, it stops just short of promoting anarchy. Generally, it's a pretty sloppy picture, with obnoxiousness passing for acting. The kids will like it, though

parents may not be fond of the questionable behavior it seems to endorse.
