The plot of 1985's TARGET (starring Gene Hackman and Gayle Hunnicutt) is not unlike this effort, and the results are similar: incredulity and boredom. Ever since Brad Dexter saved Sinatra from drowning, he's worked for Ol' Blue Eyes, here as a producer. Director Furie, who thinks he is

Vermeer with a camera, gets in the way of any possible suspense by employing a self-serving arsenal of trick shots. Sinatra is living in London with his teenage son, Newport, and the two plan a trip to Germany. Sinatra sees a familiar face from his WW II days, Vaughan, who now works for British

intelligence. He informs Sinatra that one of the top Brits has defected to the Red side and must be taken out, and since Sinatra is a marksman, he's being asked to do it. Sinatra tells him to stuff it, so Vaughan asks him for one other favor, for old time's sake: Can he deliver a message in

Leipzig to Gray, who was with the Underground during the war? Sinatra reluctantly accepts, gives Gray the message, and returns to his hotel to learn that Newport has been abducted. Nesbitt, a commie chief, says that Newport will stay in hiding unless Sinatra assassinates a spy who has defected to

Denmark. Sinatra agrees in order to save his son's life, but the target for the killing never shows up. Sinatra goes back to Leipzig and is told that Newport has been killed by Nesbitt because he (Sinatra) failed to carry out the killing. Angry and vengeful, Sinatra begins to trail Nesbitt, learns

his patterns, and sets his high-powered rifle on the road where Nesbitt passes daily. When Nesbitt's car goes by, Sinatra puts the driver in his cross hairs and fires, killing him. No sooner does Sinatra finish the deed than Vaughan and Nesbitt (it wasn't him after all) arrive to tell him that

Newport is, in fact, alive, and the man he has just murdered was the same defector that Vaughan had asked him to kill in reel one. Filmed in London, Copenhagen, and various other places, THE NAKED RUNNER only walks--and fully clothed, too.
