One of Satyajit Ray's finest works, THE MUSIC ROOM is also one of the most meditative and lyrical. Its basic concern is the demise of an aristocratic household led by Biswas. Feeling a growing resentment toward his neighbors' elaborate parties, Biswas decides to hold his own and sells

his wife's jewels to finance it. Shortly afterward his wife and son die at sea during a thunderstorm, which sends Biswas into seclusion. Four years later, when his neighbor plans a party in his newly built music room, Biswas decides to have his own party. He scrounges together all the money he has

left and throws an elegant party. He loses his sanity, however, and takes off on his son's horse. He is thrown from the animal and dies in the arms of his servants. Beautifully photographed, THE MUSIC ROOM is a fine example of Ray's directorial mastery. Released in India in 1958, shortly before

the completion of his Apu trilogy.
