This inferior adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tale has Wontner portraying super-sleuth Sherlock Holmes as he tries to uncover the whereabouts of a Rembrandt that has been stolen from the Louvre. His search leads him to the home of Sullivan, a wealthy baron who will do anything to

get what he wants. One of Sullivan's dastardly deeds leads to his eventual capture; that is, the blackmailing of Welsh with her letters. Mander is the desperate, drug-addicted artist who performs the incredible task of stealing the Rembrandt, yet cannot seem to overcome the powers of Sullivan, who

eventually kills him. As a contrast to the prowess of Wontner, an American detective is thrown into the case, but he is no match for the diabolical Sullivan. Wontner is unconvincing in his role as Holmes, coming off more as a clown than as a great detective. The rest of the cast give adequate,

though shallow, performances. The plot is unable to keep enough suspense going to maintain any level of interest; this is further marred by an inadequate production.
