An unusual and very personal Oedipal mystery, Neil Jordan's THE MIRACLE manages to coast for a while on atmosphere and charm, but it's dragged down by a sluggish narrtive. Living in a drab Irish seaside town, young Jimmy (Niall Byrne) and his friend Rose (Lorraine Pilkington) amuse

themselves by making up elaborate stories about the people they pass on the boardwalk. When a mysterious American woman (Beverly D'Angelo) arrives, their vivid imaginations run wild, and Jimmy is immediately smitten. But his efforts to woo her are complicated by evidence that she may be his

long-lost mother. The cast is low-key and appealing, especially Donal McCann in the most fully realized performance; he makes us care about a character that could have been played solely for laughs and bathos.
