Endearingly un-slick comedian Janeane Garofalo is badly served by this regrettably lame romantic comedy. Swaddled in enough wool to choke a sheep, spunky political operative Marcy Tizard (Garofalo) is packed off to Ireland to research the ancestors of

her boss, Massachusetts Sen. John McGlory (Jay O'Sanders), in hopes of giving his flagging reelection campaign a shot in the arm. Her arrival in the quaint hamlet of Ballinagra coincides with an annual matchmaking festival, and after installing herself in a shabby inn, Marcy promptly develops the

requisite combative relationship with Sean (David O'Hara), the second red-blooded Irish stud to present himself (the first, a romantic red herring, is quickly disposed of). She also makes the acquaintance of resident matchmaker Dermot (Milo O'Shea), who secretly makes her his pet project and tries

to pair her off with just about every ambulatory male within a 10-mile radius. The usual romantic comedy complications ensue: The feuding would-be lovers get stranded on a remote isle, Sean's estranged wife shows up just as Marcy and Sean are getting cozy, Dermot intervenes to make sure Marcy and

Sean work it out. It's all very well-intentioned, but Garofalo mostly looks pained and uncomfortable as various touristy Irish village stereotypes unfold around her. The film's only truly funny scene involves Marcy's destruction of McGlory's fancy Mercedes -- if only the rest of the movie showed

such spontaneity and gusto.
