rather than enlightened or entertained.

Jones's accomplishments are certainly extensive and important and this "What's up Doc-umentary" contains snippets of numerous high points. While one of the top directors at Warner Bros. animation unit through the 1950s and early 60s, Jones steered Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig

through some of their most memorable adventures in the notorious opera parody THE RABBIT OF SEVILLE, DUCK AMUCK, in which animation's own "fourth wall" is broken down when an unseen artist torments Daffy during a labor dispute, and countless disasters visited upon Jones's creation Wile E. Coyote

in his tireless pursuit of the Road Runner (Beep! Beep!). Alas, THE MAGICAL WORLD OF CHUCK JONES is not the best introduction to either the man or his work. The bulk of the running time is devoted to testimonial tributes from the current Hollywood elite, starting with Steven Spielberg and ranging

from Whoopi Goldberg to Ron Howard and Joe Dante--the director of GREMLINS who has probably the most compelling claim to being Jones's true creative heir--down to Steve Guttenberg, a strange choice who mainly seems interested in plugging his development deal at Paramount.
