A somewhat tedious version of the Maximilian and Carlotta tale produced in Mexico and bought by Warner Bros. when producer Torres claimed he had made his movie before Warner made JUAREZ. Nagel and Novara star as the doomed figureheads of Mexico propped up by Napoleon III (played by Post).

The political angles are clouded over to concentrate on the tragedy suffered by Nagel and Novara who are portrayed as innocent dupes who had no idea that the native population hated them. Novara goes mad on her return to Europe when she realizes that no aid will be sent to her husband who is

trapped by an uprising in Mexico City. Overly melodramatic and trite, with a simplistic view of the events.
