The first sequel to the epic BRIDES OF BLOOD (1968) sends Ashley off to the mysterious Blood Island to investigate a report of a corpse with green blood. En route he meets a variety of people headed the same way, including the lovely Pettyjohn, who's searching for her missing father. Upon

arrival, the group finds the island under the control of the decidedly mad Remy, who's experimenting with a chlorophyll-based drug that he claims offers eternal youth. Actually it creates green-blooded, mayhem-causing zombies. After our heroes set Remy's laboratory ablaze, they leave the island,

believing the madman has been killed in the fire. Wrong. He will be back again in another sequel, BEAST OF BLOOD (1969). The only film in this trilogy thus far available on home video, THE MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND is about what you'd expect from something with codirector Romero's name on it--a

movie complete with hopelessly insipid dialog and numerous zoom shots, presumably employed for dramatic effect. Pettyjohn, who later appeared in adult films under the name Heaven St. John, is perhaps best remembered for her role as an ax-wielding alien in the "Star Trek" episode "The Gamesters of

Triskelion."
