Wayne plays a tough easterner gone west to meet Hayes, the mining partner of his father. Whitlock and Canutt are a pair of bad guys out to get their mine after Wayne and Hayes discover gold. They frame Hayes on trumped-up charges of murder, but Wayne ultimately proves that the sheriff's

son is the true guilty party. The film ends with an exciting, and often funny, chase involving Wayne on a horse, the bad guys on a railroad handcar, and Hayes in a broken-down jalopy. This was Hayes' first role as a comic sidekick, a part he was born to play. He went on to make a career out of his

"Gabby" characterization. The film is okay for a B western, developing at a nice pace. The photography is somewhat marred by rapid panning that blurs the image at points, but otherwise the production values are fine. A good chance to see Wayne before he became a legend.
