Another effort from the early British cinema to transfer a play to the screen. This one, however, reveals some acceptance of the need to approach the cinema as an art form differing from the stage in many respects. The subtler and slicker editing help add a better sense of pacing than is

normally found in British films of this period. The story centers around a man who becomes hopelessly infatuated with a married woman. To be near her he gets a job as her husband's valet, and through blackmail moves up to private secretary. Throughout, the man makes advances toward the woman, who

continuously rebuffs him on the grounds that she cannot be unfaithful, knowing her own husband to be true. Unfortunately the witty script is still hampered by the British adherence to the stage, with the performances overacted in a style ill-suited to the screen.
