THE LIFE OF OHARU is a later film in the long and brilliant career of masterful director Kenji Mizoguchi. The plot details the painful life of Oharu (Kinuyo Tanaka), a 50-year-old, 17th-century prostitute. In flashback, Oharu's life unfolds, beginning when she, the young daughter of a

samurai, falls in love with a lower-class man, Katsunosuke (Toshiro Mifune). As punishment, her lover is decapitated and her family banished from Kyoto. After a failed suicide, Oharu becomes the mistress of a prince, who sends her away after she bears him a son. She is then sold by her father and

put to work as a prostitute. A wealthy client buys her, but he is discovered to be a criminal, and she is again forced to sell herself. In time, Oharu meets and marries a merchant and lives with him until his death. Once again, at age 50, she is forced to turn to prostitution. In THE LIFE OF

OHARU, Mizoguchi concentrates on the formal style he developed so successfully in his earlier work--extremely long takes of meticulously composed shots with a minimal amount of cutting. Kinuyo Tanaka is superb as the prostitute whose unceasing degradation Mizoguchi uses to criticize feudal Japan

and its treatment of women. The winner of the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
