Silly costume drama set in medieval Persia starring Wilde as the hero, a brilliant example of Eastern manhood, who becomes embroiled in a dangerous romance with Paget (the real Omar preferred boys), the fiancee of Shah Massey who is busy fighting the Persian/Byzantine war. In addition, his

court is rife with evil assassins secretly led by Wilde's boyhood friend Rennie and the Shah's first and former wife Hayes, who are out to overthrow Massey. Director Dieterle, who was responsible for such prestigious filmed biographies as ZOLA and PASTEUR, gave up the ghost with this one after

spending 27 years directing fine films in the US. He returned to Europe, where he directed films in Italy and Germany before retiring. OMAR KHAYYAM was not exactly a well-fitting crown to his illustrious American career. The lavish production and fine cast are hampered somewhat by a contrived and

overly complicated screenplay that delves into every conceivable cliche in less than two hours. Songs rendered by Sumac, "The Andean Nightingale," a singer with a remarkable vocal range, include "The Loves of Omar Khayyam" (Jay Livingston, Ray Evans), "Take My Heart" (Victor Young, Mack David),

and "Lament" (Moses Vivanco).
