This fine, overlooked film stars Carney as Ira Wells, an aging private eye whose former partner, Harry Regan (Duff), is murdered while tracking down a missing cat for Margo Sperling (Tomlin). A sometime dealer in stolen goods, she suspects her pet has been nabbed by an associate whom

she's failed to pay. At the urging of Charlie Hatter (Macy), Ira picks up where Regan left off, and he and Margo do a Nick and Nora Charles number as they piece together the complex clues that lead to the cat and climax of this intriguing mystery. Along the way, Margo begins to find herself

attracted to Ira, but he doesn't return her affection--at least at first.

THE LATE SHOW was director Benton's second outing, and he showed immense sensitivity and the ability to spin a good yarn. Tomlin, in her second film after NASHVILLE, and Carney, in his return to the screen after his Oscar-winning performance in HARRY AND TONTO, work wonderfully together. Carney's

portrayal of a man whose body is beginning to betray him but whose spirit won't throw in the towel is nothing short of elegant.
