When a theater company's leading man is killed during a performance, suspicions run high, but the mystery remains. Five years later, a producer reopens the theater and presents the same play with the same cast. An eerie chain of events follows, culminating in the disappearance of the new

leading man. The mystery is unlocked when it is discovered that a masked stage manager, a la PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925), in order to get the company's stockholders to pull out of the production, has set up the entire scheme. Another similarity to PHANTOM OF THE OPERA exists with the film's use of

the old theater built for the Phantom's Paris Opera sequences. The picture, which is a part-talkie, also features some unusual photography by Hal Mohr, who had already shot some 25 features and would continue working until the end of the 1960s. It was remade in 1939 as HOUSE OF FEAR.
