The kitchen of a busy London restaurant is the setting for this witty look at a diversified working-class world. Mohner plays Peter, the cook who tells his fellow workers to dream of a better life, but he goes into a fury when he realizes his own plans of marrying waitress Monica (Yeomans)

cannot be fulfilled. The underlying message of the kitchen as a microcosm of the world is never fully developed, but this is easily overlooked because of the fast-paced direction and rich characterizations. The melodrama doesn't quite fly and neither does the speechifying, but the film still has a

modest low-key appeal.
