A boy and his dog, a girl and her wolf--what does it matter? The folks at Disney know what to do with a child and an animal in a film. Meredith Salenger is a young girl living with her father, Ray Wise, in Depression-era Chicago. He badly needs work and takes a job in the Northwest, leaving

Salenger in the care of a hotel manager, promising to send for her. But Salenger can't bear the separation and runs away, making her way across the country to reunite with her father. The story of her journey is a good, often exciting road adventure in which a wolf becomes Salenger's protector and

traveling companion. Their trip takes them through various hardships and dangers, which they surmount by learning the tricks of survival with help from a youthful hobo, John Cusack, and a teenager, Barry Miller, who leads a pack of juvenile drifters. It's a totally engaging, well-written story

(though someone thought it wise to give Salenger some four-letter dialog, probably to avoid the box-office-poison "G" rating) that ends with daughter and father reunited and the wolf allowed to trot off to a life of freedom in the wild. Excellent cinematography on the road and particularly good

camerawork for the dismal gray 1930s Chicago settings. Salenger is wonderful, and so is the wolf. Costume designer Alber Wolsky received an Oscar nomination.
