A powerful film about the sorry state of Turkish life. The story centers on the relationship between a father, Erkal, and his son, Yesilyurt. After characteristically leaving behind his wife, Erkal heads for the city with his son in tow and then struggles to find work in hope of sending the

boy to school. Meantime, he fantisizes about his son's future, envisioning him behind the wheel of a luxurious automobile. Erkal is able to buy himself a pushcart, but he cannot afford the necessary permit and is pursued by the police. Adding to his troubles, his dreams of a free education for his

son are complicated when he learns that the only children who qualify for free schooling are those whose fathers have died. A dark, brutally realistic portrait of Turkish life that is not dissimilar to 1983's YOL, directed by Yilmez Guney. Like Guney (with whom he worked as an assistant), director

Ozgenturk served a prison term for his opposition to inhumane Turkish practices and for his supposedly political statements. THE HORSE, however, is far less concerned with political systems than with the treatment of humanity. (In Turkish; English subtitles.)
