In this delightful, if lightweight, screwball comedy, great comedian Jack Benny plays an inept third-chair trumpet player in a band. He falls asleep and dreams that he is an archangel named Athanael, ordered to go to earth and blow his horn at midnight--signalling the end of this world and

bringing about Judgment Day as decreed by the Heavenly Chief (Guy Kibbee) who is fed up with the way humans have been conducting themselves. Elizabeth (Alexis Smith), another heavenly type, is enamored of the scatterbrained Athanael but knows he's a lost cause. Athanael arrives on earth and is

about to blast it to eternity when he gets mixed up with a con man (Reginald Gardiner). His efforts are further spoiled by two fallen angels (Allyn Joslyn and John Alexander) who do all in their power to prevent the final trumpeting. Although Benny used this film as a running gag on his radio show

for years (claiming it had ruined his movie career), there are some comic gems here, especially in the smash finale.
