This eerie mystery has a group of characters meeting at a country inn for the weekend. Among the guests are an infirm symphony conductor, an army officer, a black-market operator, a fallen sea captain and his spiritualist wife, a couple about to get married and another about to get

divorced. They notice a strange atmosphere about the inn from the start, and the innkeeper and his daughter, played by the two Johns, are very unusual to say the least. Things get confusing for the guests when they notice that newspapers and radio broadcasts are a year old. As the bizarre plot

unfolds, it is discovered that the Johns are actually ghosts, killed when the inn was bombed a year before. The ghosts' purpose is to teach the guests a few lessons by lecturing them on their individual vices. Once the ghosts are convinced that the guests have resolved their problems, they send

them on their way, and the inn once again goes up in a sudden flash of flames. The film is a bit slow in parts, but the acting is excellent with French actress Rosay handling her first English-speaking role wonderfully. The camera captures the atmosphere of this film well and offers some lovely

shots of the English countryside.
