A horse dealer has unusual luck when one of his mares gives birth to a green colt. His family becomes quite wealthy as a result, and when the mare finally dies, her portrait is hung in a place of honor. Soon after, the horse dealer dies, leaving his estate to his sons, Bourvil and

Blanche. Robert, a neighbor of the family who's jealous of the family's wealth, betrays Bourvil to the Prussians. To save her son, Bourvil's mother is forced to submit to a Prussian officer, not knowing her son and his friend, Bertil, are hiding beneath the bed. Bourvil keeps this a secret,

plotting revenge all the while, and 15 years later decides to seduce Robert's daughter. His brother, however, has nominated the traitor Robert for mayor. Bourvil is further enraged when he discovers that Robert's family may know all about his mother's disgrace. When his daughter Lagrange falls in

love with Robert's son, Sainlouis, Bourvil can take it no longer. He forces Sainlouis beneath his bed and he reenacts the disgrace inflicted upon himself and his mother with Sainlouis's mother as (willing) victim. Very French. (In French; English subtitles.)
