This film is set in St. Petersburg at the turn of the century where Lukyanov, a wealthy grain merchant, wants his son, Yepifantsev, to follow in his footsteps. After a night of drunken abandon, Lukyanov dies, and his business partner, Tarasov, tries to teach the grain trade to

Yepifantsev. But the boy is enraged by the hypocrisy of the business world and shows little interest in acquiring wealth. Although he can easily marry Tarasov's daughter and settle into a comfortable life, he instead flits from one affair to another, becoming further disillusioned with life. When

the merchants decide they can no longer tolerate his antics, they have him thrown into an insane asylum. Eventually released, Yepifantsev lives out his days as a pauper at a flophouse established with his father's money. An interesting plot for a Soviet film, taken from the socialist writings of

the great prerevolutionary thinker Maxim Gorky.
