"The Golden Madonna" is a painting Italian villagers have traditionally prayed to during dry spells. Hidden from the Germans during WW II, it is now tucked away in a villa inherited by Calvert. Not knowing the importance of the painting, she sells it to a junk dealer. Once its relevance

is known, she sets out with Rennie to retrieve it, but it has ended up in the hands of some swindlers who pretend to give it back, though they actually have sold it to black-market dealer Carminati. After undergoing a religious conversion, the swindlers steal back the painting and all is well.

Calvert is as lively and fun as Rennie is grim. There is good use of the Italian countryside, but that and Calvert's performance aren't enough to keep the film interesting. Rereleased in 1953 by Warner Bros.
