Obsessive love and the class system are interwoven when Ozerov, a poor clerk, falls in love with Shengelaya, a gorgeous princess. He follows her wherever she goes, and writes her letters expressing his undying desire for her. She knows his feelings are genuine, but she is a princess and he

is only a commoner. So he sends her a golden bracelet with garnet inlays, his only possession of any worth, an heirloom from his mother. The princess is touched, but those around her laugh. After he commits suicide because they have mocked him, the princess goes against the norm and pays her

condolences. This depressing film, which occasionally touches on the humanism of Jean Renoir, was directed by Abram Room, who has been working in the Soviet film industry since the mid 1920s.
