An underrated Tobe Hooper film--in fact, this was the only decent movie Hooper made in the 1980s--THE FUNHOUSE concerns a group of teenagers who stay all night in a carnival funhouse, witnessing the murder of a carnival fortune-teller by the mutant son of the funhouse operator. When the

monster's father realizes that the teenagers saw the crime, he sends his son after them. Although the plot conventions are disturbingly familiar, Hooper does manage to sneak in enough distinctive touches to keep the film interesting. The "monster" is a relatively sympathetic cleft-faced albino

(makeup by Rick Baker and Craig Reardon) who works in the funhouse, hiding beneath a Frankenstein's monster mask. This device serves a dual purpose: first, it frightens the audience by presenting a monster whose face is scarier than the mask that covers it; second, it drums up considerable

sympathy for the creature by echoing Boris Karloff's sensitive portrayal of the Frankenstein monster. Stylishly directed and wonderfully shot--the climax is fairly stunning--the film is also imbued with Hooper's trademark black humor, once again exploring such themes as the horror of the American

family and freak-show voyeurism. While certainly not as interesting or accomplished as THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, FUNHOUSE is a cut above the average slasher film.
