The idea of using guided missiles on submarines is uppermost in the mind of sub commander Ford. To insure their use, he ignores the naval bureaucracy and proceeds with testing, killing a crew member and injuring himself. Stricken with guilt, he becomes mentally unstable and is

temporarily paralyzed. He soon recovers, and--convincing the Navy of his undeterred devotion--is able to continue his tests. Ford gets little support from the other performers or the tired script and, therefore, is left to carry the film on his own.
