In the provincial town of Coburg, in southeastern Germany, 20-year-old May works for an insurance company. Without the knowledge of his superiors, he benevolently aids policy who are in danger of losing their benefits due to bureaucratic technicalities. When his time is his own, he likes

to hang glide and dream of traveling to Bolivia to set a world record by gliding from the peak of Mount Palomani--19,000 feet high in the Andes--to Ixiamas on the other side of the jungle. As others learn of his dream, efforts begin to solicit funds that will enable May to undertake his daring

scheme, putting him in the uncomfortable position of having to actually attempt the flight. Though slow-paced and occasionally woodenly acted, this debut feature from director Keusch features more than a little wry humor and is generally engaging. May is an unlikely looking but amiable protagonist

to whom one warms as his self-doubts come to the surface and his predicament becomes more threatening. At the heart of the film is a reflection on the effects of celebrity on the newly famous, and a consideration of what is lost. Keusch and screenwriter Timm also ponder the nature of dreams that

become reality, suggesting that the dreaming, wishing, and waiting, in some ways, may be more fulfilling--and in May's case much less frightening--than the realization of a dream. Keusch's depiction of provincial German life is very nearly as intriguing as May's story.
