While arranging the nuptials of his sister Molly (Virginia Madsen), bar owner Whitey (Michael Madsen) frets about hanging onto the bar bequeathed to him by his Da. Local mobster Joe McCullough (Burt Young) leans on struggling Whitey to become a fence. Luckily, Joe's distracted by Whitey's pal Robbie (Chris Penn), who's muscling in on his bookie racket. Rounding out Whitey's band of friends is high-strung Truby (Jeremy Davies), barfly Smitty (Hal Holbrook), and unemployed Frankie (Luke Perry). On the eve of Molly's wedding, her ex-fiance Teddy Finn (Tom Sizemore) blows back into town and causes his old pals to re-evaluate their lives. Will Frankie foolishly trust con man Billy (Jim Belushi) with the money intended for Molly's catered affair? What will Joe do after Robbie papers his floating card game with counterfeit bills? Finally, how can an old rummy like Smitty save the day for Whitey? Despite a sterling cast, this woozy microcosm of drifters and dreamers will leave viewer pining for "last call." Sadly, these defeatist grousers, knocking back shots of whiskey, don't have the saving gift of blarney. The film itself, a paean to the timeless bonds of friendship, is trite and meandering.
