Based on a 1907 novel, this picture, set in rural turn-of-the-century Belgium, brings to light that all-too-familiar father-son conflict. Father, of course, is set in his dictatorial, old-world ways, while son is free-spirited, with more interest in the milk maid than in planting flax

seed. Father tries to keep the reins tight around his son by buying him a nearby farm, but that only increases the tension. The son's salvation does come by the end of the film when, expectedly, his father lies helpless on his sickbed. Though gorgeously photographed with great attention paid to

microscopic detail and the beauty of nature, THE FLAXFIELD, even with its heartfelt performances, never offers any new insights. The conflicts, motives, suffering, and the unity-with-the-land theme are all typical of this sort of picture. The film was originally released in 1984. (In Flemish;

English subtitles.)
