This grim wartime drama set in Nazi Germany stars Machacek as a Jewish doctor no longer allowed to practice medicine. He contents himself with a job working in a warehouse until a fellow tenant asks him to remove a bullet from the wound of a political fugitive. Machacek hesitantly agrees

to perform the operation, but he must find morphine with which to keep his patient quiet. After a long search he finds the drug and returns to perform the operation. Forced to hide his patient in the boarding house attic when the police arrive, he is shocked to discover that one of the other

tenants has informed the Nazis of his activities, and soon he is hauled into jail. Machacek confesses his "crime" and takes poison, killing himself. The police then force the other tenants to file past the doctor's body. They are all stricken with guilt and cannot look at him, save for one woman,

who closes the dead man's eyes.
