In a riveting performance, John Garfield portrays Kit, a fear-haunted veteran of the Spanish Civil War who returns to the US after being tortured by Gestapo captors who wanted to know where he'd hidden the captured battle flag of one of the elite Nazi regiments that fought with Franco.

Back in the States, Dr. Skaas (Slezak), a German agent, attempts to drive Kit insane so that he will reveal the hiding place of the banner. A bevy of beautiful women try to worm the information from the half-mad Kit, including Toni Donne (O'Hara), who lures Kit to a house filled with Nazi agents.

Maureen O'Hara is miscast here as a femme fatale, but the limping Walter Slezak crafts a sinister persona somewhere between Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet. Director Richard Wallace sets a brisk pace but lets Garfield carry the entire burden of a character plagued by anguished memories.

Attracted by the subject matter, Garfield, a supporter of the Loyalist cause during the Spanish Civil War, played this role while on loan-out to RKO from Warner Bros. THE FALLEN SPARROW is a haunting film but, like Garfield's career, it has the feeling of being unfinished.
