Lorre plays a Hungarian immigrant who is hideously burned in the face and dons an equally awful mask. To cover the cost of his expressionless false face, he regrettably gets mixed up in the mob. He soon falls in love with a blind girl, Keyes, who is accidentally killed in a car bomb

difficulties with the actor, who used drugs to justify what he termed "silly dialog" and to endure the uncomfortable facial makeup.
