A taut, literate tale of civilized men pitted against implacable nature, encumbered by a meaningless and not especially enticing title. Diffident, distrustful billionaire Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) joins his supermodel wife (Elle Macpherson)

and macho fashion photographer Bob Green (Alec Baldwin) for a jaunt to the Alaskan wilderness. Morse, Green and photo assistant Stephen (Harold Perrineau) go off on what's meant to be a quick detour in search of local color, but a bloody mid air encounter with a flock of birds downs their prop

plane, kills the pilot and strands the survivors in the frigid wilderness. New Zealand director Lee Tamahori -- who stumbled with his first Hollywood picture, the leaden MULHOLLAND FALLS -- makes a breathtaking comeback, even keeping star Hopkins from indulging in the showy bluster that's marred

so many recent performances. David Mamet's screenplay is full of the usual Mamet stuff -- men in testosterone overdrive posturing and brawling over women, money and their manly endowments -- but the brutal setting goes along way to ameliorating the he-man swagger: These guys really are up

against the (freezing) wall, and there's a bear hell-bent on biting off their cojones. A bear, you say -- it's about guys being chased by a bear? Chalk up another to Tamahori and Bart the Bear, a cunning, slobbering monster that should be the centerpiece of any public service

campaign aimed at keeping unwary children away from bear cages: You will believe a bear can be the Antichrist.
