This uncompromising portrait of Marine training on Parris Island features "Dragnet" star Jack Webb as the tough DI (drill instructor) Jim Moore, who runs the would-be shock troops through one shock after another, from night hikes to barracks scrub-downs. Aside from a minor romance with an

off-base cutie, Moore spends most of his time trying to make a man out of sniveling, whining Private Owens (Don Dubbins), who has joined up only to please his mother. (It's a family tradition: his father and two brothers were also Marines, all three of them killed during WW II.) Instead of

coddling or reasoning with the youth, Moore lays on the double-duty, almost breaking his spirit. But the lad's courage seeps out of sweating pores and he finally earns his place in the Corps. Webb is the whole show, producing and directing the taut film with furious pace and articulating his

orders like a battleship firing salvos. He's mean, but he's no Lee Ermey. (See FULL METAL JACKET.)
