Schell and Vallone play two Polish brothers who escape from a Soviet labor camp and try to join the Polish Army, which is in exile across the border in Afghanistan. While they await the arrival of a smuggler who will take them across the border, the brothers rent a room in the home of Rey

and his gorgeous wife, Papas. Trouble starts when Schell falls in love with Papas and Vallone falls for Perschy, a waitress. Paranoia sets in under the watchful eye of the Russian secret police, and Schell panics when the night blindness he developed while in prison worsens. The day they are to

escape, Vallone is stricken with typhus and needs adrenalin to survive. Unable to travel because of his status, Schell talks Rey into obtaining the drug for his brother. While he is gone, Schell and Papas make love. Consumed with guilt, Papas attempts suicide but is saved by Schell. Rey returns

with the drug, and the brothers make a desperate attempt to escape along with Rey, Papas, the smuggler, and his family. As the refugees near the border, a patrol spots them and orders them to halt. Schell runs and draws their fire, sacrificing his life so that the others may make it to safety.
